When it comes to buying bottled water, the largest consequence has been the impact it has had on our environment. Recycling? Think again. As of 2004, 85% of those bottles ended up in landfill sites or as litter on our roadsides
- The price of one 18L bottle of water can buy 2000 L of tap water at average municipal price per litre -average municipal price per litre -less than 0.2 cents / L !
- Production of plastic bottles requires significant amounts of fossil fuels and releases one billion pounds of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere annually, significantly contributing to global warming.
- The plastic bottled water consumed in one year by North Americans, requires more than 47 million gallons of oil to produce the bottles -this does not include the energy consumed in production, nor energy consumed transporting the water to destinations sometimes far, far away.
- The longer water is stored in plastic bottles, the higher the concentration of potentially harmful chemicals leaching into the water.
- Lifting and replacing the heavy, freight intensive water bottles has increased workplace injury and productivity ultimately costing the employer and society millions in injury claims and time off work.

- The WaterFillz® kiosk runs on 12w of electricity to power the ultraviolet purification stage. It also requires power to cool the water. When the custom designed refrigeration unit is running to cool the water to 38F, it only requires 46w of power versus vending machines that can suck over 1500w of power!

The Waterfillz® Digital Counters
The University of British Columbia has two kiosks in the student union building (AMS). Since installation, these two machines have saved over 40,000 plastic bottles in just over three months!
